I’ve had a pretty severe fear of falling since I was a child. A different variant of the fear of heights. I could climb to the top of a skyscraper and look out of the window, but I couldn’t cross a narrow, high bridge. I could climb up a mountain like a goat, but I had to sit down and crawl down 😃 This was the case until recently. Until I jumped from Babadağ and broke my chains.

As I love travelling and different experiences, this fear was making my life difficult. Imagine, we are going to a canyon, I am walking through it, I miss the most beautiful view point just because I can’t cross the bridge. I did not overcome my fear in an instant. It developed slowly, little by little, by not surrendering to it, by overcoming it.

The biggest step was microlight flight, which I learnt by chance in Dalyan and decided at once. I never thought I could do it, but I did it. Üstün started to say that there is Fethiye Ölüdeniz paragliding in the queue, of course jokingly. I wondered if I could do it, and the next thing I knew, I was already flying. After I flew, Üstün congratulated me with tears in his eyes. My family knew me well enough to think it was photoshop.😀

When we went from Dalyan to Fethiye, Üstün organised the flight with our business partner tourism company without asking me. It was quite an imposition. 😃Tomorrow morning at 10.30 he said, “Get ready, you’re flying”. On the one hand I was scared to death but on the other hand I wanted to break my chains.

In the morning we went to the company’s headquarters in Ölüdeniz and after waiting for a while, we said goodbye to Üstün downstairs and headed towards Babadağ by minibus. I was very anxious all the way, and as we went up, my fear peaked. Because we were in a very high position. What do you mean, am I going to be in the sky at this height soon? I was not excited or anything, the only thing I felt was fear.

We got out of the minibus and I saw dozens of people who were here for paragliding. While the pilot was making his preparations, I watched them fly for a while. There is no such thing as jumping from the edge of the cliff into the void. There is a ramp, you take a few steps on the ramp and start to rise. But still, this situation did not help me overcome my fear. I even thought I couldn’t do it and started crying 😂 My pilot immediately tried to reassure and calm me down. He actually brought it to a fait accompli. Because I guess I couldn’t do it if it was up to me.

Your pilot already gives you the necessary commands before the jump, but let me mention it anyway. After the pilot prepares you and himself, one of the staff there helps you. The pilot gives the command to walk first and then run. When you are standing, you need to rise from the ground, so do not sit down immediately. I reflexively took a sitting position, they immediately warned me, I straightened up. Then, while in the sky, the pilot said sit down and I took a sitting position. After that, the first 5 minutes were screams of pain.😃 I was so scared that I didn’t get jaundice or anything, thank God.😅

It was only a matter of minutes between being so scared and enjoying the hand on the neck. I went from shouting this is horrible to shouting this is amazing. It really was. When fear gives way to pleasure, you realise what a unique experience this is. And how I have never done it before. At 2000 metres in the sky, the only thing you feel is freedom. While the wind caresses your skin and Ölüdeniz Blue Lagoon is under your feet, all the troubles and problems remain as a point in the real world. You are living something too beautiful to be real in a utopian place.

When we descended for landing, we flew over houses, trees and landed like a bird. You are in shock as if you stepped into the real world. It’s a marvellous feeling. 😍

Jumping is not the right word for paragliding, but it has settled in our language like this. Because when it is said to jump, it is understood as leaving ourselves into the void from a high place, but there is no action like jumping in paragliding. You take off and rise from the ground by taking a few steps under the guidance of the pilot on a sloping ground. You are only told not to sit down so that you do not pull your feet immediately and rub against the ground.

What should you do when landing?

Fethiye paragliding flight is also a very calm and soft landing. You descend by gliding like a bird and set foot on the ground. There are already employees waiting to meet you on the ground and they support you by holding you. My humble advice on the flight is to take nothing with you. Focus only on the flight and enjoy the experience. I didn’t even use my phone because the pilot was filming anyway. But if you want to shoot yourself, be sure to use an apparatus that you can hang the phone around your neck.

Fethiye paragliding is flown 5 times a day. The flight hours of Skystar company, where we jump, are 08.30 – 11.00 – 13.00 – 15.00 – 17.00. You can jump at any time you wish, provided that you make a reservation in advance.

When is the best time to fly?
